wELSH BLACKS GET BACK TO THE RING AT DOLGELLAU

Wales ' native cattle breed got back into the ring at Dolgellau on Friday (October 5 th ) as the Welsh Black Cattle Society resumed its sales after an absence of more than two months.

The sale saw 146 Welsh Black store cattle – consisting of 15 heifers and 131 steers – go under the hammer at the sale, which was conducted under strict bio-security procedures.

“The sale was greatly valued by farmers, buyers and the Society alike and it is hoped the forthcoming sales of both pedigree and store cattle will continue to prosper,” said WBCS Chief Executive, Andrew James.

“Farmers have worked hard all year and market day reflects the effort and money of a 12 month period. It is ironic harvest thanksgiving can only be celebrated once the sales are complete!”

The store sale was sponsored by Tithebarn which donated £100 worth of vouchers presented by Wales regional manager Richard Lawrence.

The Highest Priced Pen of Four or More Steers were bred and sold by Ms Emily Evans, Ty Shettin, Llanwyddyn, Oswestry. Her pen of four steers aged 14 to 18 months weighed 530kg/head and were sold for £638.

The award for the Highest priced Pair of Steers went to Messrs R.O.Evans a'i Ferch, Pengeulan, Penygroes, Gwynedd. Their two 19 month-old steers weighed 535kgs and sold for £592.

Messrs R.O.Evans a'i Ferch also won the voucher for the Highest Priced Heifer. Weighing 485kgs the heifer sold for £540.

The prize for the Highest Priced Single Steer was jointly won by W.E.Roberts a'i Fab and Miss Jessica Evans, with both animals fetching £705/head.

The winners were a 27 month-old steer weighing 710kg from W.E.Roberts a'i Fab, Gwernyfelin, Talybont, Gwynedd, and a 17 month old weighing 640kg from Miss Evans of Gerdai Bluog, Harlech, who is the WBCS Deputy Young Member Ambassador.
