BOUYANT TRADE AT LLANDOVERY SALE

It was business as usual at today's (October 11) Welsh Black Cattle Society autumn pedigree store sale at Llandovery as buyers and vendors put the difficulties of the past few months behind them.

Some 98 steers, feeding bulls and heifers were forwarded for the sale with the ‘Highest Priced Pen of Four of More Steers' accolade going to Gareth and Jane Davies, Maescastell, Taliaris, Llandeilo for their four steers (aged 17-20 months) weighing 520kgs/head and which sold for £612 to Mrs Marian Lewis, Cwmgwyn, Llandovery.

The Davies' also sold the ‘Highest Priced Pair of Steers'. Aged 24 and 25 months they weighed 540kgs and were sold to Builth Wells butcher Arwyn Morgan for £630.

A 17 month-old feeding bull weighing 515kgs from Huw and Bethan Williams, Aberdeunant, Taliaris, Llandeilo was sold for £510 and was the ‘Highest Priced Single Steer/Feeding Welsh Black Bull' of the sale.

While weighing 345kg, a 15 month old heifer twin to a bull was the ‘Highest Priced Heifer' of the day. It was sold by Mr W T Williams, Caemawr, Palleg, Ystradgynlais for £420 to Messrs Morgan, Rhyddgoed, Pembrokeshire.

Bred and sold by Debbie Cumming, Blaencwarre, Hermon, Cynwyl Elfed, Carmarthenshire, a 12 month old feeding bull weighing 390kg was the ‘Best Animal Under 12 Months', and was sold for £350 to Clive Hussel.

“We are all relieved to witness the return of the livestock auctions which will result in some form of stability and normality for farmers whose livelihoods have been on hold for the past 2 ½ months,” said WBCS Chief Executive, Andrew James.

“Today's sale saw 15 farmers sell 98 store cattle to 11 different buyers. The young cattle sold extremely well as did the stores – proving quality sells.”

The sale's new sponsors were animal health company, Blue Merle – c/o David Jarman - who presented the five category winners with £30 vouchers.
