The
bulls took the lead today as the Welsh Black Cattle Society celebrated
its 50 th Annual Spring Show and Sale at Dolgellau.
Some 27
animals were sold including 12 bulls, with the top price of the
day going to the pre-sale show champion bull, Gwern-Cynyddion Erddyn
11 th which was sold for 4,800gns.
The 790kg
bull with a daily live weight gain of 1.45kgs, was sold by Robert
John Evans, Gwern Cynyddion, Llanbedr to Richard Williams, Fridd
Fawr, Llanfrothen, Penrhydeudraeth.
It was the
sixth time in the last 10 years that Mr Evans has produced the champion
bull at the Dolgellau spring sale.
Mr Evans
also produced the reserve champion bull Gwern-Cynyddion Erddyn 9
th . Weighing 770kgs with a daily liveweight gain of 1.32kg
he was sold for 4,200gns to Aled & Nia Jones, Fron Alchen, Dolgellau.
Close on
the heel of the highest priced bull was the youngest bull of the
day, Neuadd Hebog 185 th . The 18month from Mr D William Jenkins,
Neuadd-yr-Ynys, Machynlleth, weighed 720kgs with a daily liveweight
gain of 1.38kg. He was bought by Glyn Thomas, Aberdyfnant, Llanddeusant,
Llangadog.
The champion
maiden heifer was Gerddi Rhianfa 4 th , sold by Elwyn Pryce Evans,
Gerddi Bluog, Harlech for 1,020gns to Gethin Owen, Nantyrefail,
Betws yn Rhos, Abergele who joined the Society this year.
The reserve
champion maiden heifer was Traws Iona 8 th owned by Ms Emily Evans,
Tynshettin, Llanwddyn, Oswestry.
The highest
priced females were Pentra Nest 5 th and Pentra Elin 2 nd from R
& CM Jones, Crugan Farm, Llanbedrog, Pwllheli, which sold for
1,050gns a head and were bought by Messrs Griffiths, Cae Glas, Trawsfynydd.
First prize
winner, 12 month old Aber Ceinwen 5 th , was sold for 630gns by
WBCS Council Chairman, Evan Tudor to Mr & Mrs TWE Jones, Neuadd
Farm, Llanarth, Ceredigion.
The sale
was sponsored by loyal Society member Miss Elizabeth Davies, Glanrhyd,
Llannor, Pwllheli, whose late brother Brian Davies lived his life
for Welsh Black cattle.
