It was double success for the Hafodesgob Herd at the Welsh
Black Cattle Society’s New Year sale at Dolgellau (January
16) taking both the bull and female top prices of the day.
The highest priced animal of the day ay 13,500gns was the Champion
Bull – Hafodesgob Cawr (Vol 95) bred and sold by Mrs Gwenfair
Jones and Sons, Hafod-yr-Esgob Isaf, Bala.
The 23 month old bull sired by Llwynsarn Cawr and out of Hafodesgob
Branwen 43rd, weighed 1,000kgs with a daily liveweight gain of 1.43kgs.
The bull was very much in demand and was eventually bought by Enzo
Sauro, Cwmberem, Pontyberem, Llanelli, who at the same sale three
years ago paid the highest price ever in a Welsh Black Cattle Society
Sale when he bought Hafodesgob Harri for 22,000gns.
Selling for 8,000gns was Bro-waen Carlo (Vol 95) who was bred and
sold by Alwyn Morris, Merddyn, Ceunant, Llanrug, Caernarfon. The
22 month old bull weighed 790kgs with a daily liveweight gain of
1.18kg. Sired by Gwern-Cynyddion Cai and out of Bro-waun Dilys 6th
he was bought by William Jenkins, Neuadd-yr-Ynys, Taliesin, Machynlleth.
A second prize winner, Gwern-cynyddion Erddyn 2nd (Vol 95) was
sold for 6,800gns. Bred and sold by Robert John Evans, Gwern Caernyddion,
Llanbedr, Gwynedd. Sired by Bro-waen Erddyn and out of Gwern-Cynyddion
Anelka the 21 month old bull was bought by Rowland Rees, Brysgaga,
Bow Street, Aberystwyth.
Sharing a sale price of 4,800gns a head were two bulls from the
Dolgellau area. The first was 20 1⁄2 month old Machreth Banner
7th (Vol 95) . Sired by Hafodesgob Mered and out of Machreth Branwen
4th the bull was bred and sold by Lewis R Williams, Tyddyn Bach,
Llanfachreth, Dolgellau. He was bought by Mr R ap Simon Jones, MBE,
FRAgS, Ysguboriau, Tywyn.
The second bull with a 4,800gns price tag was Caerynwch Ebrillwr
12th (vol 95) . Bred and sold by Mr T W Williams, Caerynwch Farm,
Dolgellau, the bull weighed 715kg with a 1.35kgs daily liveweight
gain. The 17 month old was bought by Robert Pugh, Henblas, Llwyngwril,
Gwynedd.
Mr TW Williams also went on to sell a 16 month old Caerynwch Bleddyn
(Vol 95) for 3,800gns. Sired by Ysguboriau Bleddyn 38th and out
of Caerynwch Gwenfair 53rd, the bull was bought by Richard Vines,
Collihole Farm, Chagford, Devon.
Making his debut as a seller at a Society sale was Sion Wyn Jones
BSC (Hones) MRICS, Tyddyn Perthi, Penisarwaun, Caernarfon. The 18
month old Perthi Ymeradwr (vol 96) was sold for 3,600gns to Rhys
Williams, Tyddyn Bach, Llanfachreth, Dolgellau. Weighing 740kgs
the bull had a daily liveweight gain of 1.33kgs.
Leading the females at 2,900gns was Hafodesgob Agnes 53rd (vol93).
The 2 1⁄2 year old heifer was in calf to the sale Champion
Bull Hafodesgob Cawr.
Buying the heifer, which was sired by Fodlas Peredur 3rd and out
of Hafodesgob Agnes 26th, was Rhodri Jones, Brynllech Uchaf, Llanuwchlyn,
Bala.
Another in calf heifer, Tynygraig Peryg 6th (Vol 94) was sold for
1,500gns. The 2 1⁄2 year-old was sired by Caernwch Ebrillwr
9th and out of Tynygraig Peryg. Bred and sold by Messrs E &
M Jenkins, Tynygraig, Talybont, Ceredigion. The organic heifer was
bought by Goronwy Jones a’i gwmni, Tynewydd, Nebo, Llanrwst.
Mr Jenkins sold five heifers in total. Three in calf heifers averaged
1126gns and two maiden heifers averaged 960gns.
A 2 1⁄2 year old in calf heifer, Morwynion Jet 23rd (vol 93)
was sold for 1350gns. Sired by Hafodesgob Hefin and out of Morwynion
Jet 19th, the in-calf heifer was bred and sold by Dylan Wynne, Tyn-y-wern,
Bryneglwys, Corwen. She was bought by Mr DM Bryan, Llan Farm, Carrog
near Corwen.
Neuadd Cati 353rd (vol 93) was sold for 1200gns. The 2 1⁄2
year old was bred and exhibited by Mr D William Jenkins, Neuadd-yr-Ynys,
Taliesin, Machynlleth. Sired by Neuadd Hebog 136th and out of Neuadd
Cati 314th she was sold to Anthony Evans, of R Evans & Son,
Sker Farm, Waun y Mer, Bridgend. Mr Evans bought 12 females averaging
704gns.
The Reserve Champion was Ysguboriau Nesta 49th (vol 93) a 2 1⁄2
year-old in calf heifer. Bred and sold by Mr R ap Simon Jones she
was sired by Ysbugoriau Llywelyn 28th and out of Ysbguboriau Nesta
21st. She was bought for 1180gns by Messrs GM Owen, Nantyrefail,
Betws yn Rhos, Abergele.
“Members who support Society sales received market prices
which are realistic and acceptable to the livestock sector. Without
a market we have no base,” said WBCS Chief Executive, Andrew
James.
“The trade was up as compared to the 2006 sale and was a
very good start to the Society’s 2007 activities The sale
witnessed buyers travelling from Anglesey to Bridgend and from Scotland
to Devon to buy both females and bulls.”
