2003
Stock judging and veterinary matters have been on the agenda
for two farm visits by the South Wales Welsh Black Breeders’
Club this autumn.
They were joined by the North Wales Welsh Black Breeders’
Club for the first time when they visited the farm of Enzo and Julie
Sauro at Berem Bach, Pontyberem, Llanelli, for stock judging and
a barbeque.
There was a cliffhanger finish to the stock judging competitions
with both the South Wales and North Wales contests resulting in
ties for first place.
From South Wales, Diane James, John Rees, Rhys Francis, and Meleri
Hall had the same points with Diane James winning the resulting
draw for the trophy.
From North Wales it was Gwenfair Jones and Alwyn Jones who tied
for first place, the trophy being presented to Alwyn Jones.
In the junior stock judging (under 16 years of age) Dilwyn Davies
took first place with Dafydd Williams as reserve and Angharad Francis
in third place. North Wales winner was Rhys Lewis.
Master judge for the stock judging was William Davies of Brynglas,
Ponterwyd.
The steaks for the evening were, of course, Welsh Black beef and
had come from animals bred and reared in the Maescastell herd.
Among the visitors to Berem Bach were the current Society president,
Gwenfair Jones, the president-elect, Dai Jones and the Welsh Black
Cattle Society’s Young Ambassador, Rhys Owen.
Thanks were also given to Hybu Cig Cymru for their support of the
event.
Later the South Wales Welsh Club members travelled north for a
herd visit hosted by Islwyn and Eifiona Owen at Cefnbodig, Bala
– a demonstration farm under the Farming Connect programme.
They also heard a presentation from the Society’s veterinary
surgeon, Bruce Lawson on health issues including Johne’s Disease.
Among those welcoming the South Wales breeders to the North was
the Society’s president, Gwenfair Jones who also farms near
Bala.
