Rhys is Welsh Black Young Ambassador for 2003

The new Welsh Black Young Ambassador is 26-year-old Rhys Owen of Rhosgawen, Saron, near Caernarfon, who is employed by the Snowdownia National Park as a farm conservation officer.

Rhys has recently returned from a two month visit to Australia as part of an exchange scholarship organised by the National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs.

A member of Eryri YFC, Rhys was brought up on the family farm at Saron near Caernarfon where there is a small pedigree herd of Welsh Blacks. He went on to study physical geography at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, then adding a master’s degree in land management at the University of Wales, Bangor.

His work with Snowdonia National Park looks at land use policies as well as individual farm schemes.

"The Welsh Black Cattle Society’s Young Ambassador position is a real opportunity for me and I look forward to working with the Society in its centenary year, 2004," said Rhys.

His deputy Young Ambassador is 20-year-old Dafydd Davies of Maescastell, Taliaris, near Llandeilo, who works on the family farm. Dafydd’s family run the old established Castell Welsh Black herd.

Chief Executive of the Welsh Black Cattle Society, Andrew James said: "Young people are the future of both our Society and the Welsh Black breed. We must do everything we can to encourage them and to develop their interest in the breed.

"The young members’ association is a vital part of this, and the young ambassador has a key role to play in promoting the interests of our young members and the Society itself."
