2 October 2005 The sale by Edward Hamer, Penybanc Farm, Llanidloes was subject to heavy rain, but the inclement weather failed to dampen interest. Topping the day's prices was Idloes Haf 2nd, a polled second grade cow which at 7 ½ years old fetched 1,150gns. Selling along with its dam in the package was Idloes Bruce a 6 ½ month old steer calf. Bought by Miss Francis Evans, Ty'n Domen, Tregaron, Idloes Haf was bred by Lord Hooson QC who bred polled Welsh Black Cattle from the 1970s until 1998. At 1,120gns Idloes Siani – a 5 ½ year-old polled first grade cow – was sold with her spring born heifer calf, Idloes Katie. Idloes Siani, a descendent of the well known Dysserth Siani Flewog 15 th, was bought by Mr and Mrs Barry Carter, Llwyna Lands Farm, Llantrisent, Usk. Idloes Shannon, a polled second grade cow sold for 1,000gns. The 6 year-old cow, with Idloes Dawn her February born heifer calf at heel, was bought by new Society member, Robert Dapling, The Poplars, Kinnely, Oswestry. The 7 ½ year-old polled first grade cow, Idloes Siani Flewog, with her spring born heifer calf Idloes Siania 2nd, sold for 900gns to Doug Rowbotham, Penwernhir, Pontrhydfendigaid, Ystrad Meurig, Ceredigion. Also selling at 900gns was Idloes Haf 3rd, a polled third grade 5 ½ year-old cow with her spring heifer calf Idloes Gwyneth. This package was bought by Mr and Mrs Barry Carter. Idloes Margaret 6 th achieved the top maiden heifer price of 580gns. A polled grade 28month-olfd sired by Morlais Lewis and out of Idloes Haf 2nd. Two heifers were bought by Messrs Astley and Sons, Llyn Mawr Farm, Caersws, Powys. While the 27month-old polled home bred stock bull, Idloes Lewis Barney was sold for 950gns. Sired by Morlais Lewis – a proven polled bull – and out of Idloes Hydref 5 th , he was bought by young farmer J.G.Thomas, Bronhaul, Carno, Powys. Also, five 27 month-old pedigree steers sold averaging £606 per head, with 3 yearling steers selling for £400 per head. “Some members from within the Society are totally dedicated to breeding polled Welsh Black Cattle and the Idloes Sale offered those members an opportunity to purchase well bred cattle,” said Welsh Black Cattle Society Chief Executive, Andrew James. The Idloes sale was the third consecutive Saturday that the Society had been present at farm sales of pedigree Welsh Black herds and while the three sales offered members different types of cattle the demand and interest has remained good with plenty of new faces purchasing Welsh Blacks.
