She
may have been born in the year the world rocked with ‘Live Aid'
and Mikhail Gorbachov took the helm at the Kremlin but Foesidoes
Gweno 11 th can still give her much younger counterparts a run for
their money in the show ring!
Just one month away from her 20 th birthday the
Welsh Black cow successfully defended her title at the Gower Agricultural
Society's Centenary Show at Penrice Park , on August 7.
Not only that but she managed to achieve a hat
trick of championship wins in the Pedigree British Beef classes,
taking the Champion British Beef title for the third time in as
many attempts.
Certainly beef cattle judge and former Welsh Black
Cattle Society President, Dai Jones, Llanilar, was impressed with
her style and conformation. He awarded her the championship in front
of the Hereford bull from TE and V Roderick, and she sent on to
be named as the Reserve Supreme Cattle exhibit by J Howells, Llanybydder.
Foesidoes Gweno 11 th
was originally bought by the parents of current owners Linda and
Stuart Evans of Parc le Breos Farm, Penmaen, Gower, as a yearling
at the Welsh Black Cattle Society sale at Llanelwedd in October
1986.
Bred by Mary Edwards, Casgob,
Presteigne, and sired by Foesidoes Geraint and out of Foesidoes
Gweno 9 th , she is listed as number 111800 in volume 74 of the
Society's herd book.
“She has always been
an outstanding cow even as a youngster, with an exceptionally friendly
temperament,” says Linda.
“She has produced a number
of quality offspring, including two sets of twins, some of which
have been retained in the herd.
“She truly is a fine
example of what a genuine Welsh Black cow has to offer.”
