Cymro and Gladys are crowned bovine king and queen
Seisiog Cymro 61 st and Caerynwch Gladys 43 rd have become cattle royalty after scooping the top prizes in the Welsh Black Cattle Society's prestigious Bull and Female of the Year competition.

Sponsored by Natwest Bank, the competition awards points on an aggregate system to Welsh Black cattle that are placed in the top three at 17 shows across England and Wales.

It is the second time that bull Seisiog Cymro 61st has won the top prize. Already the winner in 2003, this year he was awarded 90 points over eight shows, compared to second-placed Seisiog Bedwyr 129 th with 68 points from seven shows, and third-placed Gravel Andrew 2 nd with 49 points over eight shows.

Top female Caerynwch Gladys 43 rd won 82 points from eight shows, with Graig Goch Meriel 13 th first reserve with 57 points from eight shows, and Seisiog Alwena 46 th second reserve with 54 points from eight shows.

Seisiog Cymro 61 st was Champion Bull at all eight shows that he entered, including the Royal of England and the Royal Welsh. He has also been awarded the Natwest Bank Bronze Bull award for the highest points collected by any animal in the competition.
Bred by Goronwy Jones from Nebo, Llanwrst and exhibited by Gwynfryn and Marian Phillips of Fishguard, the three and a half year old is out of Neuadd Dafydd Du 178 th and Seisiog Alwena 39 th .

Female of the Year winner Caerynwch Gladys 43 rd is out of Tallin Major and Caerynwch Gladys 33 rd was bred by Mr TW Williams of Dolgellau and exhibited by Ken Hughson and partners from Llandrindod Wells. Last year she was the second reserve female finalist.

Her win is extra special because her stockman, Gwyn Corfield, plans to retire this year after 50 years' service showing Welsh Black Cattle.

Welsh Black Cattle Society Chief Executive Andrew James says that the 2004 show season – the Welsh Blacks' centenary year - has been one of the best ever.

“A total of 56 females and 27 bulls competed this year – more than last year,” he says. “The Welsh Blacks have won at national show level, as well as in the interbreed beef cattle championships at both shows in Wales and England. The support of our members in attending and competing at shows has been phenomenal and there is no better place to see our cattle than at the shows.

“The awards will be presented at our AGM and Society weekend on 14 May 2005 at Aberystwyth.”
