Entries at Welsh Black store sale
Llandovery Market is fast becoming a sale ‘hot-spot' for Welsh Black Cattle with entries up 50% on last year's store cattle sale.

Some 142 Welsh Black store cattle, including 15 heifers, were sold at Llandovery on October 15, sponsored by Tithebarn.

“The prices were comparative to the 2003 sale but there was a 50% increase in the number of cattle forwarded for the 2004 sale,” said a delighted Welsh Black Cattle Society Chief Executive, Andrew James.

“Llandovery market has established itself as a recognised sale for Welsh Black Cattle attracting many buyers.

“In fact, we will be back there on Thursday (Oct 21) for 13 th Annual Llandovery Pedigree Show and Sale which promises to be the largest of its kind for 30 years, and which forms part of the Society's special centenary year sale season.”

Vouchers worth £25 were awarded to the highest priced steer, highest priced animal, pair of steers, and group of four or more steers.

David Treasure's 21 month old registered polled steer weighing 540kgs on the *blue card sold for £778 to Messrs D.E.L and D.E.D Davies of Tynddraenen Farm, Trefenter, Aberystwyth, making it the highest priced steer.

Mr Treasure of Penallt Farm, Ffawyddog, Llangattock near Crickhowell, also took home the voucher for the highest priced animal (pence per kilo) with his steer fetching £1.44/kg.

A matching pair of 17 month old steers from Mr & Mrs JG Jones of Morfa Mawr, Dryslwyn, Carmarthen sold for £600 a piece, making them the highest priced pair.

While a pen of four 17 month steers weighing 512kgs each on the blue card sold for £622 a head. The organic steers fetched £1.21/kg and were reared by ADAS Holdings, Pwllpeiran, Cwmystwyth, Aberystwyth, and bought by Messers Williams, organic farmers from Slwch Farm, Penlan, Brecon.

Other top prices included an organic steer weighing 690kgs which sold for £705. At 25 months of age, registered, and on the *red card, it was sold by Messrs T.W and E.A.Davies of Brynonnen, Nanternis, New Quay. It was bought by Enzo Sauro of Cwmberem Farm, Pontyberem, Llanelli – one of 25 steers bought by Mr Sauro for the new Carmarthenshire abattoir, Cwmni Cig Calon Cymru, at Cross Hands.

Messrs Davies sold another organic produced steer weighing 620kgs for £650. Again on the red card the 25 month old steer was sold to Mr Sauro.
