24 April 2005
The Dolgellau Spring Store Sale (April 22) saw some 200
Welsh Black steers and heifers entered among a total of 550 cattle
at the sale.
The Welsh Black store prizes were sponsored by Tithebarn, with
the sale averages remaining on par with the Welsh Black Cattle Society’s
store sale at Llandovery earlier this month.
The Highest Price Group of 3 or more Steers prize of a £25
voucher went to Mr W.J.Jenkins, Gelli, Taliesin, Machynlleth, whose
three 21 month-old steers weighed 500kgs and sold for £578
a head (£1.16 per kilo).
The day though belonged to Arwel Jones of Talymignedd Isa, Nantlle,
Penygroes, Caernarfon, who scooped a number of awards.
His pair of 22 month-old steers weighed 650kgs and sold for £665
a head (£1.02 per kilo) - the highest priced pair of Welsh
Blacks in the sale, and winners of the £20 voucher.
Next, another of Mr Jones’ steers sold for £685 –
the highest price of the day for a single steer. Weighing 675kgs,
the steer won him another £20 voucher.
Another £20 Tithebarn voucher and the highest priced heifer
title also went to Mr Jones for a 22 month-old 500kgs heifer which
sold for £502.
Meanwhile, smallholder, Mrs L.P.Foxwell of Tyddyn Rhyddid, Harlech,
Gwynedd, produced the highest priced entry per kilo – her
pair of steers weighing 270 kgs sold for £370 a head (£1.37
per kilo) – for which she received a £10 voucher.
“The sale was comparable to the sale prices and averages
from the previous week’s store sales at Llandovery,”
said Andrew James, WBCS chief executive.
“I am pleased that the spring store sales have gone well
as there has been much uncertainty and concern about the introduction
in January of the Single Farm Payment as part of CAP reform.
“With the two spring store sales having gone well we can
now look forward to the two pedigree sales which will shortly be
held in Dolgellau and Llandovery.”
