Steady trade ensured success
for Wales' native cattle at the Welsh Black Cattle Society's annual
spring sale of pedigree breeding stock at Llandovery Market today.
Some 101 animals were
entered, of which 73 were forwarded and 63 sold
Selling at 2,500gns,
Eirog Hebog a 2 ½ year-old bull became the highest
priced animal of the day – and the only bull sold
Weighing 970kgs, sired
by Llwynsarn Hebog and out of Eirog Ann 266th the bull was bred
by Messrs G. G. Jones a'i Gwmni, Llwyniorweth Uchaf, Capel Bangor,
Aberystwyth; and was bought by Rhodri Traherne, Coedarhydyglyn,
near Cardiff
The highest priced female of
the day accolade went to the Champion Female in
the pre-sale show, Neuadd Ethel 218th which sold for 1,500gns.
In calf to Graig Goch Gerwyn
16th she was sold by Mr D William Jenkins, Neuadd-yr-Ynys, Taliesin,
Machynlleth.
Sired by Brysgaga Erddyn 31st and out of Neuadd Ethel 187 th ,
she was bought by new Society member Wynford Jones, Tirpant, Trap,
Llandeilo. Mr Jones also went on to buy the Reserve Champion
Female , Brysgaga Mari 38th , for 1,150gns from Rowland
Rees, Brysgaga, Bow Street , Aberystwyth. In calf to Neuadd Hebog
151st , the heifer was sired by Ysguboriau Erddyn 45 th and is out
of Ysguboriau Dwynwen 60th.
The highest priced
female with a calf at heel was Foty Maia 3rd.
The 6 ½ year-old cow
bred by Mrs Harriet Jones, Gwynedd and sold at the sale by Dr Ruth
Watkins, Pengraig Goch, Llanddeusant, Llangadog for 1,450gns. Bought
by Ronnie Griffiths, Nantddu, Rhayader, Powys, the cow was sired
by Bro-Waen Ffefryn 2 nd (AI) and was out of Foty Marerd.
A second placed maiden heifer – Mendip Marian 3rd , was bred
and sold for 1,200gns by Mr & Mrs John and Janet Dimery-Seek,
Higher Farm, East Horrington, Wells, Somerset. Sired by Graig-Goch
Berwyn 40th and out of Mendip Marian, the heifer was bought by Selwyn
Evans a'i Fab, Coedhirion, Llanddarog, Carmarthenshire.
Bred by Mr G.G.Morris, Carmarthenshire,
Ty-Mawr Blodwen 3rd sold for 1,500gns. The 3 year-old cow with bull
calf at heel was sold by Eifion Jones, Mount Pleasant , Capel Isaac,
Llandeilo.
Sired by Neuadd Hebog 101
st and out of Wye Angela 7th the cow was bought by another new Society
member, Bruce Williams, Llandrindod Hall, Llanidloes. Mr Williams
who runs a family butchers shop in Llandrindod Wells bought a total
of 11 animals at the sale.
Crymlyn Jane 2nd , a 4 year-old cow with a bull calf at heel was
sold for 1,050gns. Bred and sold by Mrs Christine Carberry, Mapel
crest, New Inn, Llandeilo, the cattle were bought by new members
Anthony and Leslie Rees Evans of R Evans and Son, Sker Cottages,
Waun y Mer, Kenfig near Bridgend who bought a total of 18 animals
at the sale.
These included 11 maiden
heifers from Messrs J R & DH Francis, Tynywaun, Gwynfe, Llangadog.
The 11 maiden heifers forwarded by the Cennen Herd averaged 961
gns a head. Leading the Cennen herd top price was Cennen Blackberry
44th which sold for 1,080gns. Sired by Cerdin Dafydd and out of
Cennen Blackberry 28th , Cennen Blackberry 44th was well presented
and attracted great interest from those around the sale ring.
While Syfni Rossela –
the first price youngest maiden heifer in her class, and born 5/09/04
– was sold for 1,000gns.
Bred and exhibited by Messrs Gareth and Diane James, Bernards Well
Isaf, Tufton, Clarbeston Road , Pembrokeshire, the heifer –
which was sired by Gwern-Cynyddion Rhys and was out of Eugrad Rosella
25th – was bought by Mr JG Davies, Hafod Dwrbach, Fishguard.
“We had a very good sale,
and while the average prices were down slightly on May 2005 at Llandovery,
what was encouraging was the consistent trade throughout the day,”
said Mr James, who was very pleased with today's overall trade.
“It is pleasing to say that following
a busy promotional month for the Society many new breeders are purchasing
pedigree Welsh Black Cattle for the first time.
“The sale had many breeders presenting quality, docile and herd
health certified cattle which buyers are demanding.”
