A DAY FOR THE ‘BOYS’ AT LLANDOVERY WELSH BLACK CATTLE SALE

Bred by Messrs JE Hughes & Sons, Carreg-y-Ffordd, Talybont, Conwy, the cow and calf were bought by Mr A Williams, Dderi, Penycae, Swansea.

Matching the 1,450gns price was the home bred polled cow Tynycwm-Fach Victoria, which was bought by Messrs J Pearce, Bronhaul Farm, St Clears.

She was sold by Martyn Campbell of Tynycwm Fach Farm, Sylen Raod, Pontyberem, Llanelli, and is the first animal to be sold since the herd was established in 1999.

At 1,400gns, Neuadd Cati 309th was sold by Mr & Mrs KB Barnard to the Welsh Black Cattle Society’s Centenary President, Dai Jones and his wife Olwen, of Berthlwyd, Llanilar, Aberystwyth.

The organic cow - which will soon be 10 years old - had her bull calf with her, and was bred by Hywel Jenkins.

The sale also brought encouraging news for the Society and breed as of the 28 buyers at the sale, 14 were farmers buying Welsh Blacks for the first time.

“The sale was a great success and the surge of interest in the breed reflects the demand for hardy beef breeds for the modern suckler herd,” said a delighted WBCS chief executive, Andrew James.

He added, “The Welsh Blacks have a great reputation as the superior suckler breed and on the eve of Beef 2005 – which is being held at Builth Wells next week – we’re looking forward to showing the whole country what our cattle can offer farmers.
