By Jenny Buckton.
Where do Welsh Black Cattle come from?
How long have they lived in Wales?
Who was responsible for their initial breeding?
The answers to these questions and more can be found in this
superbly researched and comprehensively illustrated book.
Read about an epic journey encompassing over 7,000 years.
Discover the roles played by both man and beast, in the distinguished
history of this magnificent breed.
A ‘must’ for those with an interest in livestock,
it is also a ‘great read’ for those who want an
insight into developments in Welsh farming life.
In exploring the history and evolution of the breed, Jenny
Buckton also outlines significant developments in farming
life over the centuries – incorporating aspects of science,
folklore and literature, as well as the anecdotes and authority
of well-established breeders and enthusiasts.
Also well documented is the prominent role played by the
Welsh Black Cattle Society – a role that has ensured
that these ancient beasts of burden have become revered and
pampered prize-winners of show rings the world over.
In his foreword, HRH The Prince of Wales says he is particularly
proud of his patronage of the Society. With a deep affection
for agriculture and the land he says that “The Best
of Breeds is the historical account of Welsh Black Cattle,
but it also tells a story about the precious culture and heritage
of Wales.”

By John Rees
The autobiography of one of Wales’ best known Welsh
Black Cattle breeders details his life as a devotee of Wales’
native cattle breed.
Mr Rees, who sadly died in January 2005, came from a dynasty
of men devoted to breeding, improving, showing, and promoting
Welsh Black Cattle.
Hailing from the 12th century Brysgaga farm in Bow Street
near Aberystwyth, Mr Rees had been Welsh Black Cattle Society
President and Chairman of the Society’s Council.
His story begins in 1930, and mirrors the fluctuations in
agriculture telling of the changes that took place in his
native village and the part he played in them.
This autobiography is sprinkled with amusing tales and some
of the amazing characters he encountered over a busy and eventful
lifetime.
